Manchester United have promised supporters that next year their ambitions will be higher than just making the top four so manager Louis van Gaal is expected to be given a sizeable war chest once again as he looks to strengthen key areas of the squad.
The Red Devils have struggled to find a prolific goalscorer amongst their ranks with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie scoring a combined 22 goals this term, while Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero in contrast has netted 25 all by himself. The situation hasn’t been improved with Radamel Falcao being given more starts, as his goal tally is only four from 26 appearances – and you’d expect that he will not be given a permanent contract this summer.
Fortunately United recently announced the acquisition of PSV’s Memphis Depay who, if he performs as well for his new club as he has for the one he’s leaving, will certainly become a hero at Old Trafford.
Some have said that the Dutchman can be just as influential for United as Cristiano Ronaldo was so the expectation hanging over the 21-year-old has already gone into overdrive. With 22 goals, making him Eredivisie’s top scorer, and the domestic title won by PSV for the first time in seven years, Depay sounds just like what United need to give them an edge. A young, exciting and prolific forward who can’t wait to play for a club he has a huge amount of admiration for.

Even though this transfer has been confirmed by all parties Manchester United are still being linked on a daily basis with an expensive summer bid for Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale. Bale joined Los Blancos in 2013 and had a huge amount of success in his first season, winning the club’s tenth Champions League title. But this campaign hasn’t been as successful for the Welshman.
Madrid will finish second, but in a league where it’s first or nothing, Los Blancos are considered losers. Then with Carlo Ancelotti’s men dumped out of the Champions League semi-finals by underdogs Juventus and no place in the Copa del Rey final, Real Madrid will end the season trophy-less and under scrutiny. To make things worse, they might even lose their manager this summer.
Ex-Tottenham winger Bale has found himself under ever increasing fire this season with so-called fans going as far as to attack his car in a ridiculous attempt to show their frustration with his performances.
The more moderate supporters have taken to whistling and waving white handkerchiefs, thus creating a less than welcoming environment at the Bernabeu for the Welshman. Some of Europe’s top clubs are hoping that this hostile environment will make it easier to sign Bale as he looks to escape the hatred and media circus in Madrid.
But Bale has only been at the club for two seasons, one of which was very impressive, so to leave now would tarnish his reputation on the continent. United already have Depay who is five years younger, scored more goals and has no affiliation to the Premier League, unlike Bale. The Red Devils should just be happy with their latest addition and focus on shoring up other areas, like their midfield and a potential hole where David de Gea might not be.
There is no denying Bale’s talent and he deserves a much better treatment than what he has received from the Bernabeu faithful, but United should give up on him this time around.
Next summer may be a different story, though.
