As reported by The Mirror, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere rejected the chance to play at Birmingham City on transfer deadline day.
What’s the story?
Wilshere has struggled to convince Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that he can be trusted in the Gunners first team and had to spend last season on loan at Bournemouth. It seems that if the Gunners had their way this summer, he would have spent this season elsewhere also.
The Mirror say he had the chance to sign for Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham City on deadline day, with Arsenal allowing him to leave, but the midfielder rejected the chance despite being offered a whopping £90k-a-week.
Instead he’s decided to stay and fight for his place at the Emirates, with less than a year left on his contract at the Gunners.
A role to play?
Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal career hasn’t quite planned out the way he, the club or the fans will have wanted. Once one of the brightest prospects at the club, injuries have ravaged his progress, to the point Wenger packed him off to Bournemouth on loan last season.
His has never really been in doubt though and if Arsenal can keep him fit and healthy he could have a role to play in the Arsenal midfield. They need something to change there given their early season form and perhaps re-introducing Wilshere to the fold could provide the commitment they’re looking for in the middle of the park.
On his day he’s still a quality central midfielder and Arsenal may find his rejection of Birmingham City a blessing in the end.
