After missing out on deadline day signings, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he may need to give some younger players a go in areas of the pitch where the Reds are low on numbers.
After allowing Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan and failing to sign replacement targets, Rodgers has been left with just two
out-and-out first team forwards. However, the new Reds’ manager feels this is a chance for younger Liverpool strikers to shine and stake their claim for long term success at Anfield.
“There might need to be an intermediary way of working now,” Rodgers told The Independent. “Boys like Suso will get their opportunity. The percentage under 21’s playing in the Premier League is statistically very, very small. We are going to be stretched the limit and [we’ll be telling them] ‘if you’ve got little niggles and injuries you’ve got to man up.’ We’ve got to be together and be strong.”
“This [situation] will allow guys to stand up to the plate. You get an opportunity but you have got to take it.”
“The younger players will run through a barbed wire fence for you,” Rodgers added. “The older players will look for a hole in the fence –
and probably find one!” Liverpool are involved in three different competitions in the months of September and October and the amount of games each week may take its toll on his first team regulars.
