Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has praised the work done at the club by Niall Quinn, after the former striker decided to walk away from his role at the Stadium of Light.
The former chairman moved to an international development director position in October, but announced his decision to resign from the role in recent days.
Quinn has stated that he wants to spend more time with his family, and O’Neill has thanked the ex-Republic of Ireland attacker for all his efforts on Wearside.
“Niall has been a truly iconic figure at Sunderland, both as a player and in his time leading the club from the top,” O’Neill told The Guardian.
“His vision and drive, alongside that of Ellis [Short], played a significant part in me coming here.
“Like everyone, I couldn’t be more disappointed that he has decided to step down, but of course I respect and understand his decision.
“He has been the heartbeat of the football club for so long and his legacy is immeasurable. To me, he is ‘Mr Sunderland’ – and always will be,” O’Neill concluded.
