Nemanja Matic has tipped new teammate Romelu Lukaku to fire Manchester United to glory in the 2017-18 campaign.
Matic followed Lukaku to Old Trafford in this summer’s transfer window, with the former making the move to Chelsea after the latter had switched from Everton.
Lukaku opened his Man United goal account with a second-half strike in Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup against Champions League holders Real Madrid, although the Belgian international also missed a clear chance in his team’s 2-1 defeat.
Matic has insisted that it is normal for strikers to miss opportunities, and the Serbian has backed the powerful striker to score a lot of goals for the 20-time English champions in the new season.
Matic told MUTV:
“It’s very important for us that our strikers score goals. It’s very important for confidence. As you know he missed a very good chance but this can happen – it’s football.
“But I am happy for him that he scored a goal after that and I’m sure that he will continue to score goals and that he will score many this season.”
Matic and Lukaku are both expected to be in the Man United XI for this weekend’s Premier League opener against West Ham United at Old Trafford, where Jose Mourinho’s team will be looking to make the perfect start to the new campaign.
