According to The Chronicle, former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has been made a free agent after UAE club Al Nasr terminated his contract with immediate effect, and Southampton should consider a move for him.
What’s the word?
The 33-year-old Frenchman has been surprisingly released by Al Nasr and is now available on a free transfer.
Cabaye has enjoyed a fine career, impressing during spells with Lille, Newcastle, PSG and Crystal Palace. Although he is now ageing, Cabaye remains a top class player who could surely still provide a quality back up option to a Premier League club seeking some additional depth in the middle of the park.

Southampton, in particular, would be wise to offer a short-term deal to the 48-cap France international.
Could still make a difference
The Saints’ midfield contingent currently lacks creativity. The likes of James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Stuart Armstrong have all struggled to create regular goalscoring chances for their teammates this season. The arrival of Cabaye would provide the injection of invention that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad desperately needs.
As the south coast club head for yet another relegation scrap, they could do with all the extra quality they can get. Cabaye’s experience and leadership ought to be an asset to them throughout the remainder of the campaign.
Though he may not be a long-term solution to Southampton’s struggles, the veteran midfielder could still make a difference for them in the upcoming weeks and months.
What do you think, Saints fans, would picking up Cabaye on a free transfer this month be a good move?
